Phlebotomist (PRN)
HOURS: PRN
POSITION SUMMARY: Under the leadership of the Manager, Clinical Laboratory, the Phlebotomist – Certified is an active member of the department that provides pathology and laboratory studies and analysis for the medical and nursing staff. The Phlebotomist – Certified is responsible for the collection of blood samples from patients by venipuncture or micro techniques. The Phlebotomist facilitates the collection and transportation of laboratory specimens.
EDUCATION:
• Requires a high school diploma or a GED state certification and the completion of a Phlebotomy program.
• Requires 5 basic units of DCH education units per year.
• Requires DCH mandatory annual training.
EXPERIENCE:
• Requires up to one year of work-related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
LICENSURE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
• Requires and maintains a Phlebotomy certification from the ASCP, AMT, NCS., AAB or other approved agencies by the department.
• Requires current certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS). (If BLS verification is not current upon hire, it must be obtained within three (3) months of hire.)
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Verifies test requisitions by comparing information with nursing logs and resolves discrepancies.
• Verifies patient identification with two unique identifiers.
• Obtains blood specimens by performing venipunctures and finger sticks.
• Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures, and observing isolation procedures.
• Collects therapeutic drug-monitoring assays by working with the nursing staff to ensure appropriate drug dose to collection time.
• Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection. Maintains daily tallies of collections performed.
• Maintains quality results by following department procedures and testing schedules.
• Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, pathologist, or nursing station.
• Complies with all safety and infection control policies and practices.
• Answer telephone and be capable of finding lab results if needed.
• Maintains a clean and safe work environment in keeping collection area clean and trays away.
• Orders lab supplies as needed for stock.
• Responsible for completion and distribution of REF LAB Specimens and Requisitions.
• Responsible for order entry in LIS and other related LIS functions.
• Distribution of Outpatient samples and reports.
• Maintains a professional manner with all patients, coworkers, and guests.
• Assist in training new employees and students.
• Receives required Educational Units.
• Performs other job duties as assigned and demonstrates age specific skills.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
